A STUNNING second round hauled York’s club class golfer Simon Dyson more than 50 places up the Dubai Desert Classic leaderboard.

Dyson brushed aside his level-par round of 72 on the first day to post a four-under-par 68 yesterday and give himself a shot of challenging for the leading places in the European Tour event over the weekend.

And it could have been even better but for the world number 26 suffering a brace of bogeys on the inward nine at the Emirates Club course.

This time starting at the first, Dyson was quickly into his rhythm unlike the opening round where he was in arrears on his first hole, the tenth.

Yesterday Dyson was rapidly in credit, the Malton & Norton Golf Club man teasing out the first of his six birdies on the par-four 351-yard second.

That success prompted a purple patch on the rest of the outward nine.

Dyson collected two more birdies on the seventh and eighth holes and took his score to four under when birdying the par-five tenth.

But just as the York ace was threatening to produce one of the best rounds of the second day, he dropped his first shot on the 12th. Though he instantly got that back on the very next hole, Dyson was hit by another bogey on the par-three 15th.

However, Dyson quickly recovered to bag his sixth and final birdie of the day to put him among the leading 30 players and in a healthy position to challenge half-way leaders Rory McIlroy and Thomas Bjorn.
